Leptonic µ-and τ-decays: mass effects, polarization effects and O(α) radiative corrections Abstract We calculate the radiative corrections to the unpolarized and the four polarized spectrum and rate functions in the leptonic decay of a polarized µ into a polarized electron. The new feature of our calculation is that we keep the mass of the final state electron finite which is mandatory if one wants to investigate the threshold region of the decay. Analytical results are given for the energy spectrum and the polar angle distribution of the final state electron whose longitudinal and transverse polarization is calculated. We also provide analytical results on the integrated spectrum functions. We analyze the m e → 0 limit of our general results and investigate the quality of the m e → 0 approximation. In the m e → 0 case we discuss in some detail the role of the O(α) anomalous helicity flip contribution of the final electron which survives the m e → 0 limit. The results presented in this paper also apply to the leptonic decays of polarized τ –leptons for which we provide numerical results.

متن کاملOne–loop corrections to polarization observables
We review the physics of polarization observables in high energy reactions in general and discuss the status of NLO one–loop corrections to these observables in specific. Many high order radiative corrections exists for rates but not many NLO radiative corrections exist for polarization observables. The radiative correction calculations for polarization observables are somewhat more complicated...
متن کاملComplete O(α) solution of the μ–decay problem
In this talk I report on the results of a complete O(α) calculation of leptonic μ–decay. The calculation is complete in the sense that all polarization and mass effects have been included in the radiative corrections. I mostly concentrate on the longitudinal polarization of the electron which considerably differs from the naive value P l e = −1 in the threshold region, both for the Born term an...
متن کاملSHORT AND LONG DISTANCE EFFECTS IN THE DECAY τ → πν τ ( γ ) Roger Decker and Markus Finkemeier Institut für Theoretische Teilchenphysik Universität Karlsruhe 76128 Karlsruhe Germany
We calculate the radiative corrections to the decays τ → Mντ and π → lνl, where the meson M is M = π or K and the lepton l is l = e or μ. We perform a complete calculation, which includes internal bremsstrahlung and structure dependent radiation in the radiative decays and point meson, hadronic structure dependent and short distance contributions in the virtual corrections. Our result for the r...
متن کاملResummation of ( β 0 α s ) n Corrections in QCD : Techniques and Applications to the τ Hadronic Width and the Heavy Quark Pole Mass
We propose to resum exactly any number of one-loop vacuum polarization insertions into the scale of the coupling of lowest order radiative corrections. This makes maximal use of the information contained in one-loop perturbative corrections combined with the one-loop running of the effective coupling and provides a natural extension of the familiar BLM scale-fixing prescription to all orders in...
